Application of all kind of audit, measure and required interventions for the radiation protection of ÇNAEM  first of all, and then public and environment in the field of interaction of ionizing radiations with matter and livings,

Providing services for radiation protection,

Applied investigations on the biological effects of radiation,

All kinds of biological dosimetry, cytogenetic, radiobiological works,

Radioisotope and radiopharmaceutical applications for the needs of  industry and medicine, development and  creating an applicable form of these kinds of materials, their quality controls, radioisotope applications  for the instrumentation and purpose of quality control in industry,

Executing of non-destructive testing activities,

Executing the following activities on the above mentioned subjects: Laboratory arrangement, industrial relationship, applications of quality assurance and personel training on this subject, providing technical consultancy for the TAEK and ÇNAEM on the expertise field.

Food Unit

The mission of the Food Unit is to conduct research for implementation of food irradiation technology in food industry, to inform food producers and exporters, universities, research institutes, regulatory bodies and public, training and consultancy. Food Unit serves as 3 laboratories Food Chemistry, Food Microbiology and Radiation Enthomology and Detection of Irradiated Foods.

Food Unit, is a unique in Turkey, has scientific and technological knowledge capacity on food irradiation. This unit is ready for scientific and technological collaboration with all governmental and non-governmental organisations and persons involve in food irradiation.

Animal Science Unit

The general aim of research efforts at the section of animal research-application is to contribute to healthy production from livestock animals by solving the problems related to animal nutrition, reproduction and health by the use of nuclear and related techniques.

The main targets are the following:

  • To increase the  productivity and quality  of the production from livestock animals by  using nuclear, biological and gene technologies.
  • To carry out  research-development (R-D) project studies for diagnosing and preventing major animal diseases causing production and economic losses.
  • To carry out studies aiming at establishing the quality  assurance system for food security and safety.

Gamma Irradiation Plant


The multipurpose tote box type gamma irradiation plant was established in Sarayköy Nuclear Research and Training Center (SANAEM), in 1993. The irradiation source is Cobalt-60.  Irradiation facility is used for sterilization of the single-used medical supplies, food irradiation and cross-link of polymers. Dosimeters are used to measure the absorbed dose by the irradiated products.  After measuring the dose, the irradiation certificate is prepared and the products are released. This kind of radiation does not leave any radioactive residue or any of the irradiated products to become radioactive.

Radiation Microbiology Laboratory (RML)

RML was assembled in 1993 in order to establish the radiation sterilization dose of medical supplies. Beside, sterilization dose audit carried out to confirm the continued appropriateness of the sterilization dose. All of the procedures described above have been applied successfully in RML since established in order to reply the demand of the manufacturer firms. RML is the only accredited laboratory in Turkey which gives service in this area.

Agriculture Unit

One of the most useful areas of using the nuclear energy peacefully is the agricultural research. In the unit, the researches have been conducting investigations by using nuclear and related techniques on the basic areas as:

a)      Plant breeding studies for improvement of new cultivars

b)      Studies for investigating the relationships of soil-plant-nutrient-water

c)      Studies on plant protection and pesticide resudies

The goal of the research in plant breeding is to obtain genetic variation and then select  promising plants for the following generations. Our breeding group’s works are mainly based on cereals, food legumes, oil crops, fruits, potato, tomato and fodder crops in order to solve specific problems as:

  • improved yield
  • high quality
  • abiotic stress tolerance (drought, salinity)
  • diseases resistance
  • nitrogen fixation capacity
  • mechanized harvesting

After long term breeding studies in the unit; some new mutant varieties were improved and released such as TAEK A-3 and TAEK C-10 (two soybean mutants with higher seed yield and oil content), TAEK-TUTLUER and TAEK PEŞKİRCİOĞLU (two tobacco mutants resistant to blue mold disease) and TAEK-SAGEL (one chick pea mutant with high yield and quality included resistance to anthracnose disease). In addition, one safflower mutant TAEK-USLU with high yield and oil content is under release prossesies.
